So how do you accelerate your future? We’ll support you in each of your roles as you develop over the course of the two year programme but you will have a part to play in your success.
We asked some of our existing graduates to describe how the projects they have worked on, their experiences, and their drive determined their success.
Stream: Business IT / Placements: Certas Energy UK – Warrington & Falkirk, Exertis UK – Burnley
The diverse nature of the programme helped me to develop competencies that I am certain will continue to aid my future career progression.
My focus during my placement at Certas Energy UK was split between project management of the integration of their largest acquisition and responsibility for a large number of internal business improvement projects.
At Exertis UK, I worked alongside the development team to improve efficiency by digitalising processes. This ranged from warehouse distribution to software development. My role as a business analyst was to liaise with the business, understand and document their requirements, work with the developers to design and develop a solution and then to test and implement this solution alongside the business.
The combination of working in two businesses in different industries gave me a vast range of experiences in a short space of time. It also encouraged me to work at a fast pace in order to deliver my projects on time. This has been extremely valuable, and I’ve been able to apply it elsewhere in my day-to-day work.
Whilst on the programme, DCC has also sponsored my completion of the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner project management certification. I am certain this went some way toward helping me secure a permanent role as a Project Manager for Certas Energy UK following the completion of the programme.
My role is focused upon strategic projects and acquisition integration across the Energy businesses. I worked on the acquisitions in Hong Kong & Macau and the USA, as well as supporting our European businesses transition to the cloud. I discovered that I really enjoyed working on projects during the programme, so project management was a natural progression for me.
The programme is a great opportunity to challenge yourself, take on responsibility and discover your future career. The group is flexible enough to offer space to develop your career interests. DCC is continuing to expand around the world which is only going to increase the diversity and opportunities that are available to graduates.
Stream: Business Management / Placements: DCC Vital – Dublin, DSG Energy – Hong Kong
With DCC, I have accelerated my career further than I thought was possible in just two years.
My first placement was in DCC Vital, where I worked on acquisition projects as a Business Development Executive, as well as marketing projects for the Medical Devices division. During my time on the placement I saw two acquisition projects through to completion, helped create and launch a new company website and was also given sole responsibility to create several market analysis reports that were immediately used to support our development projects.
My second placement took me to Hong Kong, where I joined the Marketing and Communications team at DSG Energy as a Project Executive. Here I was tasked to build an extensive market visibility study that was later presented to the Group CEO – a hugely challenging yet exciting project! I was also able to use my language skills to act as a translator for the LPG Divisional Managing Director and external contacts at a two-day LPG Conference, translating between English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
In both roles I was really made to feel like one of the team and was instantly involved in projects that were delivered to the top management, making the final outcomes even more rewarding. I am very appreciative of the high level of trust that was placed in me, which pushed me to achieve results beyond my expectations.
Before moving to Hong Kong for my second placement, DCC supported me in learning a third language (Cantonese). Being able to go to Hong Kong for my second placement has now led to me securing my ideal permanent role here with DSG Energy post-programme. In addition to this, regular training sessions not only developed vital business skills such as presenting and writing, but also provided an opportunity for the graduates to come together and discuss and exchange our experiences.
My current role as a Business Development Executive will see me being responsible for supporting, implementing and facilitating business development projects; these will include geographic business expansion projects and new products/service development.
With DCC, I have accelerated my career further than I thought was possible in just two years. During my time on the programme I have learnt a third language, worked in two different industries, experienced life in two countries, and secured a permanent role that I truly enjoy.
Stream: Logistics / Placements: Flogas Britain – Leicestershire; DCC Vital – Dublin
The different placements on the programme gave me a clearer view on how I would like my own career to progress.
My first placement was with Flogas Britain working in the scheduling function within the Operations department. I worked on the development and implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and was given responsibility for the implementation of a capital expenditure project – on my first placement! This gave me a great grounding in using data to drive business decisions and operating an office logistics environment. In contrast, my final placement in DCC Vital exposed me to day-to-day operations and team management skills. I was responsible for the relocation of a recent acquisition’s warehousing activity and the ongoing management of the Operation from its new home.
The graduate programme has not only provided me with wide-ranging experiences and opportunity but also generally allowed me to develop my own professional capacity significantly more than I expected in just two-years. I’ve been given high levels of autonomy and responsibility with just the right level of support.
There’s formal training around people management, commercial awareness and finance which has been great in shaping my understanding of business and helped me be more effective in my roles but I’ve also benefitted from the performance and development plan which has provided valuable training in self-awareness, reflection and continuous professional improvement.
Now I’ve completed the programme I have accepted a permanent role with DCC Vital – my placement showed me just what this fast-growing division could offer by way of a variety of opportunities. I am now a Group Acquisitions Project Manager responsible for managing acquisition projects and supporting the different businesses within DCC Vital to extract maximum value. Along the way I have worked in the Healthcare division as a Project Manager, Operations Manager and Business Development Manager.
The DCC Graduate Programme is uniquely positioned to provide a combination of diversity of experience, autonomy of work and ability to make a lasting impact in an organisation. It is the perfect environment in which to learn about different markets, business cultures and professional disciplines. My experience is that you get out as much as you put into the programme, with support at every stage to ensure you deliver results, develop professionally and find a place in the business long term.
Stream: Marketing / Placements: Fuel Card Services – Oxford, Butagaz - Paris
It’s a great path for ambitious graduates who want to take on responsibility from day one and gain relevant work experience in different business sectors and countries.
Fuel Card Services (FCS), a DCC Retail & Oil business in Oxford, was my first placement on the programme. As a Marketing Executive I was responsible for marketing the company’s products on the European markets, in particular the German market, and it gave me the opportunity to work with different teams and to gain exposure to different working cultures. One of my favourite projects was managing the development and re-launch of the FCS’s fuel station finder app, which allowed me to gain experience in negotiation and collaboration with partners. Additionally, it was one of several projects I was able to see through from outset to successful implementation.
My second placement saw me taking on the role of Operational Marketing Project Manager for Butagaz, a French DCC LPG business based in Paris. Part of my responsibilities were the creation and management of marketing campaigns as well as the coordination of Butagaz’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) website. I benefitted greatly from working closely with well-known international agencies and various stakeholders from within and outside the business. Working in French was an exciting challenge and an amazing opportunity to fully get to know another culture and become fluent in French!
When I started the programme, it was important to me to have the chance to learn as much as possible about different business segments in order to grow professionally. Not only did I receive invaluable work experience in my placements, but DCC also sponsored me to study the (CIM) Certificate in Professional Marketing qualification. Also, my placement businesses have further enhanced my skillset with training on things like Photoshop and HTML-5 and before I even began my Butagaz placement in Paris I was given one-to-one French lessons. It helped me feel well-prepared for my move and adapting to the new work environment was all the smoother for it.
It’s been a steep learning curve but now I have a clear vision of my strengths and the career path I would like to pursue. At the end of the Graduate Programme, I was offered to stay in the position I held during my second placement in Paris but with expanded responsibilities. These include a divisional project across DCC’s LPG businesses, which is an exciting assignment and is sure to enable me to maintain accelerated growth even after the Graduate Programme.
Stream: Sales / Placements: Certas Energy UK – Newport & Bristol, Butagaz - Paris
For anyone looking to travel as part of their work, the DCC Graduate Programme gives ample opportunity for placements across the world (mainly in Europe, North America and Asia).
The main role I had on my first placement with Certas was as a Customer Account Manager on the Commercial Sales team. My day-to-day duties involved managing a portfolio of clients, developing relationships using a consultative sales approach in order to better understand their various needs. My project was to diversify and grow the product portfolio for clients of each sales team across the South-West region, giving me great exposure to senior management and allowing me to travel as part of the role. Although a steep learning curve I got the opportunity to have a real impact on the commercial success of the region and business.
I have just joined the Innovation Team at Butagaz in Paris as a New Business & Innovation Analyst where I’ll be investigating new ways for Butagaz to generate revenue outside of core Gas. This will be a more of a strategic role compared to the operational focus at Certas.
The programme has provided me with significant opportunity for personal and professional growth. In preparation for my placement in Paris, the one-to-one French lessons quickly increased my proficiency to a professional level to prepare me for life and work in Paris. With all the support, I have enjoyed a smooth transition from one placement to another.
During my time on the programme I have also obtained the PRINCE2 Agile project-management certification with DCC sponsorship. My next role will be significantly more project-based so this will be the perfect platform to utilise my new qualification.
The effect your direct contribution on the programme can have on such a large company is profound. I’ve developed both personally and professionally during my first year and every step of the way I’ve felt the support of DCC. The Graduate Programme team is only ever a phone call or email away if I ever need help with anything and I also have the ongoing support of my Graduate Coach and Buddy.
