So how do you accelerate your future? We’ll support you in each of your roles as you develop over the course of the two year programme but you will have a part to play in your success.
We asked some of our existing graduates to describe how the projects they have worked on, their experiences, and their drive determined their success.
As a Business IT Graduate I was given the opportunity to gain international experience in a fast-paced and challenging environment. This meant I was given immediate responsibility delivering business improvement projects needed to support the rapidly evolving nature of the company.
My first placement was with the Healthcare division with DCC Vital. In my role, I was given the responsibility to manage the delivery of the Customer Relationship Management system (CRM) across the sales divisions. This gave me an in-depth understanding of the business and exposure to senior management.
DCC have a great support structure and as large as the Group is it really has more of a close-knit community feel. The “graduate buddy” scheme is also very beneficial as this connects you to someone who has already been through the programme and can help guide you through it too.
My second placement was with the Retail & Oil division with Certas Energy UK. Here I worked on various business process improvement projects where I was given full ownership to steer the projects to successful completion. My main achievement in this placement was the successful project management and roll out of a new product to the heating services engineers.
DCC are very passionate about their graduates and are committed to enabling you to maximise your potential. Over the two years you and other graduates are bought together regularly to be developed against the graduate programme’s competencies. You are also sponsored to complete a professional qualification which I took full advantage of, completing a project management qualification. Alongside all this, you also have a coach who really helped steer me in the direction I wanted my career to go.
All in all, I am glad I choose the DCC Graduate Programme. Not only has it given me the opportunities to live and travel abroad and live in different cities, I have developed both professionally and personally. I have now completed the graduate programme and have accepted a permanent role as a MIS Analyst with DCC Vital.
When deciding what graduate programmes to apply for, I had one thing in mind: I wanted REAL experience that will enable me to accelerate my growth and learn as much as possible. The Business Management stream on the DCC Graduate Programme lived up to these hopes and expectations.
My first placement was with Exertis, part of the Technology division, where I was a Project Coordinator for a business integration. After this placement, I joined the DCC LPG division and I was Project Manager for the implementation of a new reporting tool. These two opportunities were unbelievably exciting and challenging – not for the feint hearted but for those who have real ambition.
Each of my placements were in a different European location, which gave me the opportunity to experience not only different workplaces and styles, but different cultures. Thanks to the training and support provided by the programme these transitions were painless and I always felt equipped with the necessary tool kits for tackling the next challenge. During my last year on the programme I was also given the opportunity to begin the CIMA accounting qualification. Extra qualifications and trainings such as this are accessible, and actively encouraged.
After completing the Graduate Programme, I was offered a permanent role with Butagaz, based in Paris, as their New Business Development Analyst. DCC provided me with one to one French lessons before making the move which helped enormously. My workday is now 90-100% through French which has been an amazing challenge and opportunity in itself.
I am happy to admit that when I first started on the DCC Graduate Programme I was not sure what I wanted to do long term in my career. However, my time on the programme and experience I was given, resulted in me now knowing what I want long term.
These valuable experiences started from day one. I had no idea how I would actually cope with the practicalities of living and working abroad. The programme gave me that opportunity and I found out that not only could I cope with this but I absolutely loved it! My placement in Dublin involved a lot of travel to the UK, from a corporate environment in Dublin to a warehouse in the midlands. In one placement alone I learned so much about different working environments and how to tailor my own behaviour to work best with those around me.
Throughout the programme there were opportunities provided for the whole graduate cohort to get together for various training days. Not only did these provide development on multiple topics it also provided an invaluable chance to share our experiences with each other, and build some fantastic, long lasting relationships. We were also assigned a coach that proved most useful in being able to discuss long term aspirations.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the programme for me is how I have developed in it. My line manager in my last placement saw real potential in me and gave more responsibility and line management experience during this placement. I immediately jumped at this opportunity. This promotion from within gave me a real confidence boost and a real vindication of how the graduate programme developed me as a person, as well as helping me dictate my career path.
I started my DCC journey back in September of 2012 and had placements in the Healthcare and Technology divisions. During my time with Healthcare I was focused on market analysis where I was tasked with identifying product gaps in the Irish pharmacy market that we could exploit. I also worked on new product development where we took products from idea generation through the sourcing and development stages until we launched in pharmacies nationwide with integrated marketing in place to drive sales.
After Healthcare I joined Exertis UK within the Technology division. My career accelerated quite quickly in Exertis as I was exposed to senior management from day one and within a few months, I was offered a Marketing Manager role upon my completion of the graduate programme. At Exertis, my initial projects were focused around developing a connected home proposition for Smart Tech, implementing a pan-European Social Media Strategy and coordinating the channel marketing for PC brands such as Dell, Intel, Microsoft, and Lenovo.
During the programme, my skills were honed through courses such as Finance, Presentation Skills, Leadership, and Business Writing as well as hands on mentoring within the Group and via professional coaching which DCC organised on my behalf.
Without a doubt, the variety of projects and initiatives that DCC put in place were integral to my development both during and after the programme. After three and a half years at Exertis UK, I have been promoted 4 times, most recently becoming our Head of Channel Marketing where I am now responsible for a team of 10 marketers across the UK business. The graduate programme was put in place to provide real responsibility from day one and in doing that, DCC have been pivotal in helping me accelerate my career thus far and hopefully long into the future too.
As a Sales Graduate I was given the opportunity to gain international experience in a fast–paced and exciting environment. DCC’s businesses are focussed on strong commercial performance and the results of your contribution in the Sales stream will add real value to the Sales’ functions you are placed with. For one of my placements I was positioned in the Sales team with DCC Vital, a business within the Healthcare division. I came rapidly acquainted with their business model and the range of products, both third party and own brand, which the company has in their portfolio. My role gave me the autonomy to manage the sales cycle for a number of products with my assigned customers. The sales cycle encompasses pitching the products, negotiating pricing with the procurement teams and closing the deal. Closing a sale is one of the most rewarding feelings.
Another aspect of the Sales stream that I thoroughly enjoy is meeting a wide variety of people on a daily basis. A field sales role gives you a huge amount of freedom to best dictate your own time and strategy in order to achieve the budget set by your manager. The biggest self-motivator I have found so far throughout the programme is that I am solely responsible for my own success, which is not something you get with every role. I have also found that my problem solving ability has improved since beginning the programme. Another skill that I have developed is negotiation both with the customer to maintain the highest price point possible whilst keeping the business and internally with my Sales Manager to get a cheaper cost to help secure new business.
I have hugely enjoyed my time on the Sales stream and the massive learning experience it has been. I would definitely recommend the Sales stream as the skills you will learn are invaluable.
